  1. "The seventh man" illustrates the struggle of a man trying to get over traumatic events that he experienced in childhood. As a kid, he lost his friend in a typhoon wave that came and swept his companion away. Using writing techniques like imagery, similies, and personification, the author brings to life the images of the past. The symbolism of water plays a significant role in the story in how it is both a symbol of pain, as well as a symbol of rest. After losing the friend he had, the waves were described almost like they were living creatures that saw the man and wanted to pull him in and destroy him. He stayed away because he was afraid of being reminded of his past. On the other hand, once he grew older, he realized he had to face his fear and honor his friend. Back on the beach after many years he takes a look at the waves and they seem gentle and they lap peacefully. As he’s stepping into them he surrenders the past and finds peace within himself. In a way, the water helped him know that the worst was over, and he can move on.

  2. The Seventh Man by Haruki Murakami illustrates that water symbolizes a role of pain but also a relaxing feeling. In this story a big furs’ wave comes and strikes down on Haruki’s hometown. This wave kills Haruki’s friend and his dog. Haruki is now stuck with them sight of seeing his friend die, and with the feeling knowing he could of saved him. Some of the details shown is Haruki moves to a new town, and can never sleep because is always woken up with the sight of his friend dying. Haruki was really scared that he couldn’t have a intimate relationship with anyone, because is to scared to express his feeling. Then Haruki realizes he needs to face his fears to get those fears out of him. Haruki goes back to his hometown, and back to the beach of where the furs wave struck. He goes in the water and drops dead. Haruki he has just realized his friend is not mad at him and wants him to keep living his life with out fear. In this moving story Haruki Murakami shows how hard it is to live life with fear but how much it makes life better to face them. Haruki illustrates this by the use of water. Dylan Schreck period 2

  3. In "The Seventh Man" Haruki Murakami portrays water to be symbolic as a really huge part of the story showing the man’s fear to water from a tragic accident that happened to one of his best friends like a brother to him. For instance, Haruki Murakami uses different ways of devices to portray the character's fear. "I stayed away from my hometown for 40 years. I never went near that water shore." This character describes his fears from the accident with his friend K but really he is regretting and blaming himself for K's death and keeps referring to how he could have saved K. Haruki Murakami shows character fear of the water though the doubt of himself and feeling guilty of the accident. Water is feared by a lot of people but the character has a reason to have fear after losing his best friend K. Alex Stein

  4. "The Seventh Man" by Haruki Murakami shows that he is scared to face the past and what happens. Also, that the beach is where it starts. My reasons are that when he was little he moved away from where he lives because he had nightmares. In addition, he never went back to the beach cause he is scared and don’t want to think about the past. For the beach, he wonders what would happen if he goes in. But when he does goes in he takes all the pain and fear out of him. Haruki Murakami captures that even though you have fear from the past you have to face it and go past it before you will regret it. For example, he means release what you have in your inside so you don’t build up pain inside and you will regret it one day. Kenny S

  5. Pain can be symbolized through Water by a Hurricane destroying everything in it's path to a roaring Waterfall crashing onto sharp rocks hidden below it's misting collision. Rest can be symbolized through Water by a small gurgling Stream making it's way through a forest floor to a warm Beach with cool Waves lolling thier way up to lap at the tips of your feet. this is what i see, but the question is what DO YOU SEE ? 8. In "The Seventh Man" by Haruki Murakami displays water as both traumatic pain and a relaxing/calm feeling. In the story, a huge wave comes in and nearly destroys his hometown. The wave also killed his best friend, K, and K's dog. Now Haruki is traumatized of seeing his best friend being swept away by the wave and having the guilt of not saving him on time. For 40 years Haruki stayed away from his hometown and never came near the beach because he had nightmares of seeing K having a huge smile on his face and looking straight at him. Then he realizes he needs to face his fears so he would stop having those nightmares. As he steps into the water Haruki releases all the anger and guilt he had been holding up for 40 years and found peace. In this story water illustrates being feared and being at peace it also shows how life can be tough when fear is keeping you from other things happening and making life much better once you faced it and letting it go.

  9. In the story "The Seventh Man" by Haruki Murakami portrays water as pain but also a symbol of rest. A huge wave hit his hometown which swept away his friend K, and his dog. Now Haruki has the image in his mind everywhere he goes and thinks on how he could’ve saved his friend but instead he left without him. for about 40 years he was never near any beach because he knew if he were to get near one he’d see his friend in the wave with a huge smile looking right at him. Haruki even had nightmares of his friend being in the huge wave. To stop all of these nightmares and flashbacks he want back to his hometown. He was at the beach where his friend was taken away and he started to step into the water, he knew he had to forget what he’d done and that it would be all over. The author shows that one day you will regret something you’ve done wrong and you will be forgiven.

“The Seventh Man” by Haruki Murakami is told by The Seventh Man the man the last man to tell his story to a group of people inside a house in while waiting for a storm to pass. His story starts out by him saying, “It barley missed me but in my place it swallowed everything that mattered most to me, and swept it off to another world”p334,10-11) This quote is saying that the wave destroyed everything he cared about and is a tragic of his life. The seventh man lived in a seaside town in the province of Japan with his father and brother, The seventh man was athletic and tall, because of the age difference he did not have a close relationship with his brother instead K, The Seventh man’s best friend was more like a brother. 11. In Haruki Murukami's story "The Seventh Man", the battle through fear was portrayed in a story his character told about his childhood nightmares that went on until his middle ages. "He tried to run, but now there was no time to run. In the next instant, the wave had swallowed him." (Murukami 340) In that scene of the story, K, the storyteller's friend, was swallowed by the gigantic wave the typhoon had brought. Another wave came, and he describe this one as a non-Earthly being taking the form of a wave. His fear all began when the waved swallowed K. He felt as if he failed to save his acquaintance. Every night, he would have horrid nightmares about the incident and activities involving the sea. He would dream about someone would drag him down the bottom of the sea, and he would wake up screaming. His fear grew more and more so he decided to leave town. Its not only until his middle ages did he realized that his friend wasn't mad at him at all. His life was interpreted by the sun down at dusk, the seemingly endless night, and the sunrise at dawn. He went back to his home and there he reconciled with himself, in the very beach that swallowed his friend many years ago. He stopped having dreadful nightmares after, and was able to move on with the remainder of his life. Murukami's story states that fear is something that anyone shouldn't try to look back and disregard, but instead try to work it out amongst themselves.

In the story, “The Seventh Man”, the author , Haruki Murakami, uses water to symbolize a man’s pain, and in the end, his peace. An example of this would be, “There’s no way for me to tell, of course, what it will be for each of you. But in my case it just happened to take the form of a gigantic wave. It presented itself to me all of a sudden one day, without warning. And it was devastating [pg334].” This quote from the story reveals that the water is painful to the seventh man. He described the wave as “devastating”, meaning it made a huge and painful impact on his life that he will forever remember. An example of how the wave turns into the man’s peace is, “I lay that way for a long time, face in the water, unable to stand. But I was not afraid. No, not at all. There was no longer anything for me to fear. Those days were gone [pg.347].” This quote reveals that the water has turned into the seventh man’s peace. He says that “there was no longer anything for me to fear,” this means that he is no longer afraid of the water, and in fact he is now content with it. The seventh man also states that , “those days were behind me,” meaning that the days of him living his life in fear of the water and the waves is over. That is how the author uses water and waves to symbolize pain and peace.

  13. In Haruki Murakami's story, "The Seventh Man", water is used to symbolize pain and also peace through use of imagery. The "seventh man" had experienced a traumatic experience of his best friend being swallowed by a giant wave. In the quote,"I never went near that seashore-or any other."(Murakami 344) The seventh man is stricken with guilt because he did not take the opportunity to rescue his friend, and develops a fear of swimming in water because of a nightmare he has frequently, induced by the tragic disaster. Bodies of water had made him fear drowning, as his friend had. Water, though, also showed peace, as shown in the quote,"My heart throbbed at the back of my throat, and my arms and legs lost all sensation. I lay that way for a long time, face in the water unable to stand. but I was not afraid. Not, not at all. There was no longer anything for me to fear. Those days were gone."(Murakami 347)This quote could be taken literally in the sense that he had conquered his prolonged fear of drowning and was finally at peace, as shown when he says,"I stopped having my terrible nightmares,"(Murakami 347). Through actions of the seventh man, the author symbolized water as pain and peace. Thomas Pham P.3

“The seventh man” by Hakuri Murakami demonstrates the consequences of not facing your fears and letting them control your life. The character the seventh man lost his best friend K he protected K from everything and treated him like a little brother. A typhoon hit their town, and during the eye of the typhoon the seventh man went down to the beach and K and his little white dog followed him. Before the seventh man left his father warned him as soon as he seen signs of wind to rush home because the 2nd half the typhoon was approaching. At the beach the seventh man notice that the water was not coming in and hitting the beach as usual. The seventh man began to fear that the wave was going to come up and swallow him. So he yelled to his friend, to tell him he was going to leave, but the fear in his voice took over and his friend unknowing of the wave approaching continued to keep his interests on the object in the sand. A loud rumbling sound came roaring out of what seemed to be the Earth. The seventh man realized that K did not hear the sounds and still has focus on the sand. The seventh man began to run away when he turned around he yelled again this time K heard him but it was too late. The wave was already hovering over him getting ready to swallow him up. This guilt and fear of a wave now coming for the seventh man followed him for years later; he couldn’t get married and really couldn’t socialize with people. Until over 40 years later he went back to his hometown and realized that he need to face his fears not run from them.
